Our clients' 70's era split-level had a small family room/den with a non-functional fireplace and cork wall board. Our goal was to open the space up and provide a more modern and functional place for the family to relax.
The new wood-burning fireplace installation includes a new polished travertine surround and hearth. Flanking each side is dark-stained custom cabinetry with storage below for AV equipment and open shelving above that contains lighting to highlight the homeowner's art collection.
The outside wall near the existing patio door was increased in thickness to provide a recess for the flat-panel television. Mounted on a swiveling arm, the TV nestles in it's niche when not in use, but can be swung out and adjusted to the proper angle when family and friends gather in the comfortable new space.
